Food and Drink

Fresh food

North Chideock has a wonderful range of venues to satisfy any appetite, all within the local vicinity.  Here are some of our favourites.

Three fabulous thatch pubs:-

  • Thirty minutes walk down to Seatown and the splendid, sea-front Anchor Inn, recently voted the Best Pub in Britain. If you do not fancy walking all the way there and back, you could also drive and park up on the left, just before you get to St Giles Church and cemetery on the left hand corner of North Road.  This cuts your walk in half.  After you cross the A35, keep to the left fork, Mill Lane, when walking, as there are few cars taking the lane.  Unfortunately the Anchor does not take bookings during the peak season so get there early: https://theanchorinnseatown.co.uk/
  • Take the public footpath down through the field and across the River Winniford. Cut across the fields to join up with Hells Lane Holloway that goes down Shute Lane Holloway, and on into Symondsbury and dog-friendly Ilchester Arms.  The Holloway is essentially taking you over the steep hill to the north east of the cottage, past Colmers Hill.  It’s a fabulous walk and it takes about 45 minutes depending on how long you stop to examine the ancient face carvings in the stone, down Shute Lane: https://www.ilchesterarmssymondsbury.co.uk/

Our preferred option for lunching in Symondsbury is the fabulous Symondsbury Estate ‘Kitchen’.  This has the atmosphere of a smart café with honest dishes of meat and ingredients sourced from their farm estate or locally.  Even if you just pop in for a coffee, there is so much to see in the shops and art galleries around the courtyard:

If you are driving and looking to stock up on edible and beveridge delights and presents for the folks back home, then family-run business, Felicity’s Farm Shop, going west out of Chideock, is the best local solution.  Avoid A35 traffic jams by taking Carters Lane out of Chideock and turning left, the shop is immediately on your right.  The Farm Shop also has a take-away café with excellent coffee and breakfast baps made of local free-range produce.  At the rear of the café is a garden where you can sit and look out at Golden Cap and the bay whilst you eat:

If you are looking for a cheaper shopping option, then there is a Spar Shop and Post Office in Chideock village.  Turn left at the end of North Road and it is on your right, with parking outside:

Going west out of Chideock and after Morcombelake, take the turn off to the ancient village of Charmouth which benefits by having an A35 by-pass.  The best fish and chips we have eaten are available at the Charmouth Fish Bar in the village High Street.  It is so popular that it is advisable to book your order on line:

Opposite the Fish Bar, also on the main Street, is the village Nisa which partners with the Co-op to provide provisions at a reasonable price.

A favourite brunch option is to park-up in Charmouth and walk over the cliff top to Lyme Regis, along the River Lim to the sea.  That way, you don’t feel so guilty about having an enormous brunch at the dog-friendly, sunny Swim Café, over-looking the sea-front and the cob with lots of seating inside and out and excellent customer service.  We recommend you book.  The last brunch is served at 10.45 and the lunch menu starts at 12.00.  If you prefer not to drive then there is also the hourly, cost efficient X51 and X53 dog-friendly double-decker bus service to take you back to your car in Charmouth or, all the way back to Chideock:

In the other direction, eastwards along the coast, is the Hive Beach Café at Burton Bradstock.  Not that the food or service is more than mediocre but the location on the beach is special, eating a cream tea with the wind whipping around you:

If you don’t want to go that far you can get great coffee, croissant, pies and cakes from the best local bakers, Rise.  This is on the Esso roundabout leaving Bridport on the A35, with convenient parking outside.  If you prefer a café to take-away, then there is a Rise Café in West Bay:

Another beautiful location nearby is Beaminster.  The Ollerod restaurant is known for its good quality cuisine and ambience:

For a simple lunch and fabulous local cakes served by friendly ladies, a hidden away but popular café can be found at the back of the central shop in 22 The Square, Beaminster – Cilla and Camilla
